Side Effects of Excess Cortisol
- Obesity: especially abdominal fat gain
- Plaque formation in arteries which increases risk of heart disease
- Increased total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels, lower HDL
- Increased glucose
- Insulin resistance
- Loss of normal collagen metabolism (the basis of healthy ligaments and tendons), leading to injuries and pain
- Disruption in the sleep cycle, leading to less restorative sleep, diminished growth hormone, and decreased muscle repair at night
- Interference with normal thyroid function
- Decreased immune system
- Increased need for antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
- Hair loss, thinning skin, easy bruising
